We have collected summaries of the fish bowl session and we share them here with you.
I was quite shocked how rough the situation still is for female professors at German and Italian Universities, but also how well these professors handle the situation.
Sometimes we do not feel enough (for grant or positions applications). A good mentor could make the difference.
The balance between work and life is important and sometimes it is difficult to find in jobs like ours, since we could continue working at home.
This session was very inspiring for me. As I feel most of the time less confident about the new position or opportunity in career. But due to this session I realize it’s a case where many of us feel the same. We work or research or study where most of the candidates are male around us so when an opportunity is understood obvious for the male candidate as panel has also majority of male and they feel more comfortable and easy to work or discuss with male candidate, it disturbs sometimes. During this session I came to know it’s a situation we many face. So you need to be confident in yourself and keep trying again and again. And from some of us experiences I also realize that there are good mentors, supervisors and Professors too who are guiding, mentoring, and helping many of us to do our best, to choose career as a mathematician, as a researcher and giving us opportunity to overcome these problems. My main take away from this session is that there may be some difficulties, there may be some struggle we have to face due to male or any other reasons but if we are confident and consistent then we can do anything. And we should support each other in whatever way we can because your little guidance can give someone a force to move forward in career and to believe in goodness. It was a very good experience for me to attend the session and this workshop.
There is not a “perfect” time to do something. The only time we have is “now”.
Sometimes our voice is not equal as men’s voice.
